This walks through every option with the consequence spelled out — plus the full 12-step official procedure and the document upload spec, all sourced verbatim from the 2026 DOTE brochure.
Accept and Join
A seat is allotted to you.
You're happy with the seat. You take it now and stop the process — no more rounds, no more waiting, no more anxiety.
Download the provisional allotment order, report to the allotted college, pay full fees on the date specified.
You walk into your B.E./B.Tech seat. The process ends here for you.
Non-reporting or non-payment cancels the seat. You don't get pulled into further rounds — you're out of TNEA 2026.
- The allotted seat is your #1 or top-2 choice.
- You're willing to commit and want to be done.
- The college is near you and you don't want to risk losing it for a marginal upgrade.
- You got #7 out of 30 choices and a better seat is plausible.
- You're only willing to join if you get top-3 — leaves upward potential on the table.
Accept and Upward
A seat is allotted, AND choices above it are still possible.
You take the current seat as a SAFETY NET but stay in the queue for a better choice in the upward movement. You pre-pay at a TFC, not the college.
Download the TENTATIVE allotment order, report to the nearest TFC within the joining window, pay fees there. Upward movement runs after the round.
Upward movement lands you a choice higher on your list. Your previously paid fees roll to the new seat.
No higher choice opens up. You're confirmed with the current seat (no loss — you paid at the TFC).
- You got, say, choice #5, and choices #1–#4 are realistic with normal upward movement.
- You want a safety net BUT also room to climb.
- You can travel to a TFC within 5 days.
- You got your #1 — there's nothing above it. Pick Accept & Join.
- You can't make it to a TFC in 5 days (deadline is strict).
Decline and Upward
A seat is allotted, but you don't want THIS specific seat.
You reject the current seat outright and gamble on getting a higher choice in upward movement. No safety net.
Reject in the portal. Wait for the upward-movement result.
Upward movement assigns you a higher choice. You then report and pay.
No upward choice opens up. The current seat is gone — you cannot reclaim it. You move to the next round and start over.
- You're confident upward movement will hit a higher choice.
- The current seat is genuinely unacceptable (too far, branch you don't want).
- You're comfortable with the risk of dropping to the next round.
- The current seat would actually work if upward fails.
- Your shortlist is shallow — you might end up with nothing.
Decline and Move to Next Round
A seat is allotted, but you don't want it AND don't trust upward.
You reject and skip the upward gamble. You'll re-file choices in the next round, hopefully with vacant seats from the current round.
Reject in the portal. Wait for the next round's choice-filling window.
Next round has fresh vacancies from candidates who didn't report. You file choices again and might land something better.
Higher-ranked candidates also entered the next round; the seat matrix is shallower than you hoped.
- You missed the rank cutoff for upward and the current seat doesn't fit at all.
- You're willing to start the choice-filling clock over.
- You're running out of rounds — TNEA runs 3 rounds total.
- The current seat was passable and you're mostly hoping for a miracle.
Decline and Quit
A seat is allotted, but you're leaving TNEA entirely.
You exit counselling. No further rounds, no further allotments. Usually picked when you have an alternative (deemed, JEE, private, drop year).
Confirm quit on the portal. You're out.
Your alternative comes through — you're free to pursue it.
Your alternative falls through. You cannot rejoin TNEA 2026.
- You have a confirmed seat elsewhere (deemed univ, JEE main allotment, etc.).
- You're committed to a drop year and JEE/NEET prep.
- You don't have a concrete alternative.
- You're quitting on a bad mood — sleep on it.
Upward or Move to Next Round
No seat allotted based on any of your choices.
Allotment came up empty. The system asks: try upward movement on whatever frees up, or skip to the next round?
Pick upward — if any seat frees up before round close, it's yours.
A candidate ahead of you declines, a seat frees up, you grab it in upward movement.
No seat frees up. You go to the next round automatically — nothing lost.
- This is your only path — there's no allotment yet to accept.
- You're still hopeful something opens up before the next round.
Non-confirmation of the allotted seat within 2 days = automatic loss. You roll to the next round but with one less round in the bank. TNEA 2026 · 3.
